First Tonglau Declared Monument - Lui Seng Chun

This month my blog continues the tonglau series by introducing Lui Seng Chun, the first tonglau to be declared monument in Hong Kong, which reflects the importance of vernacular architecture is gradually gaining official recognition, implies the hope of tonglau conservation. More importantly, Lui Seng Chun is the chosen site in my first group project 6 years ago, so I want to encore une fois to deepen the research. On 18th November (Friday), I joined the guided tour ( REGISTRER HERE ), also asked the neighborhood for oral history. Their knowledge and insight provide bottom-up perspective to understand this building significance and revitalization effectiveness, which fill the gap of the official information. Lui Seng Chun is a four-storey prewar tonglau built in 1931, designed by the architect W. H. Bourne, and owned by Mr. LUI Leung. Prewar Tonglau in URA “Lung Shing” Area of Kowloon City Redevelopment Project – Stepping Experience in 68 Nga Tsin Wai Road

If you have read my last blog entry, you must know I am fascinated with tonglau. On 15 th October (Saturday), I am excited to join the Kowloon City tour guided by Alfred Ho, the founder of Urban Studies Institute since he introduced prewar and postwar tenement buildings in that area to enrich my knowledge on the differences of tonglau and European building, and facilitate my focus research on common-place heritage.  As we know URA has commenced the redevelopment project of the Nga Tsin Wai Road / Carpenter Road Development Scheme (KC-017) in Kowloon City. There are four prewar tenement buildings within the redevelopment area which are all ungraded. Although URA plans to preserve their architectural elements, I am still worried about the situation of the building such as preservation, restoration and demolition. Sham Shui Po is full of my childhood memory since I was born and lived in tong lau in this district. And I started my journey of undergraduate studies from the research of Hong Kong medical history.
